The British essentially tell the Americans that they cannot travel past the Appalachians. In Pennsylvania Journal and Weekly Advertiser Thomas Paine argues against slavery by asking the Americans why they find slavery ok if they are about to revolt due to feeling enslaved by the British Crown.With that consistency… they complain so loudly of attempts to enslave them, while they hold so many hundred thousands in slavery and annually enslave many thousands more, without any pretence of authority or claim upon them.
Virginia's governer Lord Dunmore is approached by enslaved black people to offer their loyalty to him and the British Crown and fight against the American rebels. In exchange for their freedom. He denies this request.
Lord Dunmore takes up the slaves request. They became known as the Ethiopian Regiment and were made up of about 200 men that escaped from slave camps. After winning a battle an emancipation proclamation was issued by Lord Dunmore to offer freedom to any slaves that escape and fight for the British Crown.
